I am going to speak from my heart. I live in Canada where Same-Sex Marriage was legalized here in 2005, 3 years before Prop 8 had even began and we have never looked back. I can honestly say that this law has not really affected me in a negative way. Canadians are very comfortable about people being who you are and believing what you want to believe, which makes it a very easy place to be a Mormon, and I am grateful for that.
That being said, Elder Nelson's words rang true for me. I believe Marriage is of God. He said "God is the Father of all men and women. They are His children. It was He who ordained marriage as the union of a man and a woman. Marriage was not created by human judges or legislators. It was not created by think tanks or by popular vote or by oft-quoted bloggers or by pundits. It was not created by lobbyists. Marriage was created by God!"
The Proclamation is a clear pattern for the next life. We are given the tools need to succeed in this life and the next. If we fulfil our roles now, we will be more comfortable with them later in the next life as we continue as mothers and fathers. We are “created in the image of God” We will eventually become like Him. My knowledge of the Atonement is also something I am really grateful for. Because of the sacrifice Jesus Christ made, I am able to repent and draw closer to Him, and strengthen my relationship with my eternal Elder Brother. I know he is part of my eternal family as well.
